Mimi Holliday has been one of my favourite and most aspired to lingerie brands for about 5 years. Pretty much since I actually started taking an interest in lingerie really. They used to have quite a range of small band, large cup bras (and small band, small cup too actually), but this collection has lessened over the years. One of my favourite pieces of lingerie ever is their Woozie Shoulder Bra which I own in a 28G all the way back from late 2013. I’ve owned a few more pieces of Mimi over the years, but never yet reviewed them on the blog…until now!
UK Lingerie got in touch and offered us the opportunity to review a set of our choice each on the blog, and I was immediately overwhelmed by all the choice. The only criticism I’d have is that their size range isn’t huge compared to the collections, especially as many of them do offer a broader size range than they have on the site, but that’s not the end of the world. Normally the first thing I do when I’m asked to pick a bra to review is to find my size in the drop down lists on a site, but when only a few 30 bands and no 28s popped up, I decided I’d look at the brands instead, find one I know I love, then pick a set from there. So when I saw Mimi Holliday in their list of brands, I knew what I was going to do.
My favourite designs from Mimi Holliday have always been the lace styles that feature eyelash lace, plus the bold and contrasting colour choices. The Tilt-a-Whirl bra and matching knickers had been on my radar since their release thanks to the combinations of these aforementioned features, so I decided to take the plunge and opt for that set in a 32FF (a sister size to my usual 28GG/30G) and size medium.
Shape & Appearance
As I’ve said, this set has everything I love in lingerie – eyelash lace, delicate fabrics, pretty colours – *sigh*! The minty aqua and candy pink are supposed to be reminiscent of old time carnivals – it definitely reminds me of seaside fairs with candy floss (or cotton candy, depending on where you’re from!). It’s super feminine with the pastel shades and pink bows, but playful and cute with the combination of colours.
The Tilt a Whirl maxi bra is has three part cups, the bottom outer part acting as a sling to the strap. The upper part of the cup has the eyelash part of the lace over a very sheer and super delicate mesh – it acts as an illusion so it looks like the pretty eyelash lace is holding itself up.
The top edge of the cup is finished with a strip of pink silk which matches the bow at the gore and on the straps as well as the front part of the straps themselves which are made from the pink silk. The rest of the bra is made from a combination of the sheer mesh over the bridge and aquamarine power mesh in the band. The construction and fabrics used definitely have a luxury feel to me, which is what I want from a brand like Mimi Holliday.
Because the bra is a soft cup, it doesn’t have a huge amount of uplift but instead retains a more natural shape. The maxi bra is however designed for a fuller bust (as opposed to others in the collection) and so is lined with the sheer mesh in the cups, so the support is more than you’d expect from such a delicate looking piece of lingerie.
The straps are half adjustable at the back, and the bra fastens with 3 rows of 2 hooks and eyes – the fastening is actually wider than you’d normally expect for one with 2 hooks interestingly, so it’s not a standard one.
Size, fit & comfort
I chose the Tilt a Whirl Maxi Bra in a 32FF which is a sister size to my usual 28GG or 30G because the smaller band sizes weren’t available from UK Lingerie. I was expecting it not to fit that well because of having to sister size, but I was pleasantly surprised!
Yes, the band is definitely on the big side and I have to wear it on the tightest hooks which isn’t ideal but I love this bra so much that I can deal with that. To be honest, the band actually fit better than I was expecting anyway – I think it possibly fits a little closer to a 30 band.
The cups are also an excellent fit for me. They were spot on in terms of size: there’s no overspill, the wires hit me in the right place at the side and I’ve got no cup gaping or wrinkling. I think the only potential for cup fit issues with this bra for me is that the top edge might dig in slightly if I really aggressively scoop and swooped – so, I won’t do that!
It’s also super comfortable in addition to looking whimsically gorgeous. I’ve worn this for several full days at work now and not had a single issue. The combination of luxury fabrics and good fit works really well for me here.
I also received the matching briefs (the “sexy knicker” as they’re called) in a size medium which is my usual Mimi Holliday brief size. These are designed with the same ultra sheer mesh from the bra, the pink silk and bows along the top edge, and a pretty lace around the top side and leg edges. They’re also very low cut at the front, dropping down to a section of the same eyelash lace from the bra at the gusset. From the back, these are very revealing – I can see why they’re called the sexy knicker! They’re very comfortable and make an excellent match for the bra.
Plus I can also say that if your fiancé accidentally puts them in the washing machine and tumble dryer TWICE, they will survive! (Yes, we have had words about him picking up my hand wash only lingerie with the rest of the wash, and yes, the second time he washed them was immediately after the first time, as in, on the same day, right after I’d berated him for washing them…lots of words!!).
The Mimi Holliday Tilt-a-Whirl Maxi bra is available at UK Lingerie in sizes 32-36 E-G for £39. The Tilt a Whirl briefs are available at UK Lingerie in sizes S to XL for £24. You can also get a Padded Super Plunge bra in the same collection in core sizes as well as a Peep Thong. Due to this being an older line, the availability of the set elsewhere in other sizes is quite limited.
